We are dedicated to playing a key role in empowering and supporting a sustainable future for the UK and Ireland. Our driving purpose demands that we continually strive to set new standards for sustainability in Energy-from-Waste.
These principles extend across all areas of our business, from operations to finance, and encompass environmental, social and governance responsibilities.
We are determined to support the transition to a circular economy and drive progress on the path to net zero.
What matters most is the action we take to make progress on sustainability – not only within our own business but in tandem with industry partners, suppliers, local authorities, regulators and national government bodies.
Sustainable waste treatment is the core of what we do, but there are many other ways in which we are working to contribute to a better future.

Minimising greenhouse gas emissions
We monitor and report on our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions in line with the GHG protocol, and are consistently exploring opportunities to reduce these

Carbon capture and storage (CCS)
We are setting up an industry-leading pathfinder project with the aim of deploying carbon capture at full commercial scale for the first time

District heating
We are working with partners to accelerate the roll-out of district heating networks that utilise heat from our facilities for delivery to local households, businesses and public buildings.

Maximising recovery
Our operations and maintenance teams are working constantly to optimise the recovery rates achieved by our facilities, using state-of-the-art technology and applying best available techniques to drive continuous improvement.

Secondary aggregates
We have invested in specialist facilities to ensure that bottom ash from our facilities is reprocessed into secondary aggregates for use in the construction industry, which reduces reliance on virgin minerals.

Renewable fuels
As part of our effort to decarbonise our operations, we have begun trialling the use of hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) as a start-up fuel for our plants in place of diesel.

Catalysing progress
We work with industry partners, regulators and government bodies to encourage a policy framework that supports a net zero future.

Removal of plastics
Taking recyclable plastics out of residual waste streams is crucial to reducing emissions from our facilities and we strive to work with our supply chain partners and advocate for policy change to encourage separation of these materials before they reach us.

Local impact
We embrace our responsibilities towards the local communities in which we operate, enabling people to develop new skills through training, creating apprenticeships and delivering long-lasting career opportunities.

Managing air quality
We rigorously monitor emissions and the results are checked and verified by the Environment Agency, and the Environmental Protection Agency in Ireland.
