Podcast interview: The story behind a carbon capture breakthrough
In a new podcast interview, Encyclis Low-Carbon Development Director Andy Bedford explains the story behind our carbon capture breakthrough in 2025.
As work starts to deliver the UK’s first decarbonised Energy-from-Waste facility, at Protos ERF, in Cheshire, the latest episode of the ENDS Waste & Bioenergy podcast explores the process that led to the Government’s historic final investment decision being announced in September.
Due to be operational by mid-2029, our Protos carbon capture and storage (CCS) project will enable Protos ERF to safely treat residual waste and recover resources such as baseload electricity from the process, while also preventing the release of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
What’s more, combining Energy-from-Waste with Carbon Capture unlocks the delivery of Carbon Dioxide Removals (CDRs), which will be essential in the UK’s progress towards its net zero obligations.
The Protos CCS project also creates a blueprint to enable further rollout of the technology in the waste sector and other industries.
Listen to the episode to hear Andy Bedford explain the role of this landmark project in supporting the UK’s environmental and economic growth priorities – and find out what’s next for carbon capture.
