Newhurst ERF reaches one million tonnes milestone
Encyclis’ Newhurst Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) reached a major milestone this month when it surpassed one million tonnes of residual waste processed since the plant began operating in May 2023.
The achievement means one million tonnes of non-recyclable waste diverted from landfill or overseas shipping.
As a result of continuous operations, the facility, near Loughborough in Leicestershire, has generated enough baseload electricity generated to power 80,000 homes every year. In addition, around 200,000 tonnes of bottom ash from the combustion process has been recovered and transformed into secondary aggregates for use in construction and landscaping, alongside thousands of tonnes of metals extracted for recycling
The Encyclis operations and maintenance team at Newhurst ERF has continually strived for operational excellence, maintaining high standards of safety, compliance and efficiency in the operation of this world-class energy recovery facility.
Jim Thompson, Plant Manager at Newhurst ERF, said: “This milestone reflects the skill, hard work, and dedication of the high‑performing team at Newhurst. It showcases the ability of Encyclis to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient operations with consistently high availability – strongly supported by our executive, engineering, and commercial teams. It’s an achievement we can all be very proud of.”
