Enforcement activity is increasing with DEFRA having recently published a new Waste Crime Action plan backed with greater enforcement powers, a dedicated intelligence unit and additional £45 million for the Environment Agency spend on waste crime enforcement. However high-profile incidents like that of Kidlington, Oxfordshire continue to showcase the scale of environmental damage and community disruption these sites can cause, underlining that while government is taking this issue seriously, there is also a clear role for industry in supporting compliant, long-term waste solutions.

The UK recovers over 40,000 tonnes of aluminium each year from energy recovery processes, while around 2 million tonnes of aggregate are produced annually from bottom ash. These materials would otherwise be lost. Instead, they are returned to use in construction, manufacturing, and infrastructure, extending their value well beyond their original lifecycle.
